How do you get the most accurate speed test results?

  • A) Make sure you are not downloading any files, music or videos
  • B) Close any software that uses the internet such as download applications i.e iTunes
  • C) Shut down any other computers attached to your network
  • D) Ensure all broadband leads and cables are properly attached including filters.

This Broadband Speed Test gives the most accurate results on fixed line broadband which do not rely on wireless connections, wi-fi or mobile broadband signal strength. Designed for home users as well as businesses, it works equally well on ADSL, SDSL, DSL, cable and fibre optic connections.

Please note that the broadband speed test results are only an indication of your connection speed and results may be distorted if you are checking your broadband via a home wireless network, satellite, a wireless hotspot or mobile broadband dongle.

How does this speed test work?

When you start the speed test, the tool tests your broadband speed by downloading and uploading "packets" of data via "pings". The speed at which these things happen allows us to assess your broadband speed in seconds.

Do many people use this broadband speed test?

Absolutely. Up to August 2008, over 600,000 broadband connections were tested since launching in January that year. Some "testers" were pleased with their broadband speed test results and some were disappointed.

Is it free to use?

Why is my broadband so slow?

Check your Internet connection settings, the software you are using, all cables, leads, modems and filters. It is a good idea to get your ISP to do a line test on your connection. If nothing seems to be wrong and your broadband speed is not satisfactory, it may be time to switch broadband provider.

Who is the fastest broadband provider?

In May 2008, it was assessed that O2 broadband were the UK's fastest broadband provider with average broadband download speeds of 6.41Mb.
